Afterglow is inspired by the moment just after the sun has slipped from view, when its warmth remains in the sky and everything below begins to fall into shadow. Soft layers of gold, ochre, cream and muted amber fill the canvas, interrupted by a dark, uneven line that suggests a distant horizon. A small passage of turquoise adds a cooler note, like a glimpse of water beneath the fading light.

Built through layers of colour and texture, the painting shifts between landscape and abstraction. From a distance, it feels still and expansive; up close, its scraped edges and quieter marks reveal movement beneath the surface. Afterglow leaves the place undefined, inviting the viewer to bring their own memory to it.

About the artist
Sonia Anton is a Romanian-Australian self-taught artist based in Bucharest. She grew up in Antibes, surrounded by painting in her mother’s atelier, where art became a familiar part of everyday life. Her path later took her across Europe, Australia and Mexico, experiences that continue to influence her sense of colour, place and atmosphere.

Sonia’s work moves between abstract and figurative painting. She is drawn to expressive colour, layered surfaces and the feelings a painting can hold without telling a fixed story. Her works are held in private collections in Romania, Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands and many more.
