Schipbreuk tijdens storm is a 19th‑century oil painting from Germany, titled Schipbreuk tijdens storm, measuring 90 by 120 cm and sold with frame.
Description from the seller
Beautiful large oil painting on canvas from the 19th century, a follower of Claude Joseph Vernet, signed Opdenhoff
What is depicted is a ship that has been wrecked on a rocky coast, the ship’s wrap is still being tossed back and forth on the wild sea. At sea, debris drifts as crew members cling to it. Light and atmosphere are captured very realistically on the canvas.
Description of the appraisal report Geert Kocken:
This concerns a painting with an impressive maritime scene from the Romantic period that depicts a shipwreck on a stormy, rocky coast. The composition and the dynamic light-dark contrasts (chloro-obscuro) show a strong stylistic similarity to the famous 18th‑century shipwreck paintings by the French master Claude Joseph Vernet (such as his well-known works The Shipwreck of a Shipwreck in Stormy Seas). However, the name you mention refers to the Dutch-German artist George Willem Opdenhoff (Fulda 1807–1873 The Hague), who was a well-known painter within Dutch Romanticism and was heavily influenced by these kinds of classical sea battles and storms at sea. Opdenhoff studied with Andreas Schelfhout and J.C. Schotel and was mainly known for his tranquil seascapes with great attention to detail. This kind of scene with a shipwreck and dramatic rescue operations is less well known in his oeuvre. The painting has craquelé but is otherwise in good condition
(Digital appraisal report available for buyer viewing)
Canvas size 70x100 cm
Overall size 90x120 cm
The work shows craquelé and normal signs of aging. Some spots of paint loss.
The whole is set in a beautiful worked (original) frame.
Signed lower right Opdenhoff
