Saint Francis of Assisi with the Stigmat, an 18th‑century Baroque oil painting on oak panel from France by the Northern European School, measuring 19.2 × 15.6 cm and sold with its frame.

AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

For sale is a very well preserved and skillfully executed 18th century oil painting on oak panel, depicting Saint Francis of Assisi receiving the Stigmata.

Dimensions:
Panel: approx. 19.2 × 15.6 cm
Panel thickness: approx. 6–7 mm
Including frame: approx. 27.6 × 23.8 cm

The saint is shown in his Franciscan habit, his hands raised and displaying the wounds of the Stigmata, while tears run from his eyes as he looks towards heaven.
The painting is particularly finely and expressively executed. Great attention has been given to the face, hands and details of the habit, while the restrained brown, green, ochre and cream tones create a very harmonious composition. The subtle halo surrounding the head further adds to the atmosphere of the work.
The painting is executed on an oak panel, approximately 6–7 mm thick. Oak panels were particularly characteristic of Northern European painting traditions, and the work can most reasonably be placed within the Northern European School of the 18th century. (Netherlands, Belgium (Flanders), Germany, or Northern France, where I had acquired the painting from a private collection.)

It is presented in an antique wooden frame which complements the colours and character of the painting very well.

The painting is in very good original, ready to exhibit condition. The panel is very well preserved without any signs of structural damage or previous overpainting.

There is some old woodworm damage to the wooden frame, this is confined to the frame and is no longer active.

The back has been fitted with a secure mounting system, making it ready to hang on the wall.

A very attractive and characterful religious painting, with fine details and a particularly harmonious appearance in its antique frame.
