Murano - Sculpture, Vierge - 27 cm - Murano glass

Large modernist sculpture representing the Virgin Mary in prayer, made from Italian Murano art glass, probably dating from the 1960s.

The sculpture features a tall, particularly slender silhouette, characteristic of Mid-Century Italian glass design. It is formed in transparent solid glass incorporating a substantial mass of cobalt blue glass, especially intense in the lower part.

The face is detailed and molded in the glass. Hands are joined in a prayer position and a large circular halo of transparent glass is arranged behind the head.

The substantial thickness of the glass produces beautiful optical and refractive effects, with different shades of blue depending on the angle and lighting.

Sculptures of Madonna with comparable construction are documented in Murano glass production of the 1950s–1970s. Related models were notably marketed at that time by specialist importers such as Jordan's Importing Company (J.I.Co.).

Handcrafted with small bubbles, internal lines and irregularities characteristic of hot-work glass.

Condition: good overall vintage condition. Light scratches and superficial traces related to age and use. Small bubbles and manufacturing irregularities visible in the mass of the glass. No chips or major structural damage identified in the photographs.
