Description from the seller

Dutch School (19th-20th century) around Johannes Evert Hendrik Akkeringa (1861–1942). Net menders by Katwijk. Oil on canvas. Dimensions including frame: 58x66 cm. Dimensions without frame: 39x47 cm. The painting and the frame are in good condition with signs of age. Johannes Akkeringa is known for his depictions of net menders and fisherwomen in the dunes of Scheveningen and Katwijk.

In a broad dune landscape, several fisherwomen are busy mending and spreading the nets. In the foreground a fore-and-aft leaning woman with a white cap and blue-green skirt forms a striking color accent. On the right sits a second net mender by the stretched net, while to the left and further in the landscape various figures are depicted. The low dunes and cloudy Dutch sky give the whole a fine atmospheric effect. To the left rear is a man with a horse and cart removing nets.

On the back signed: Akkeringa and elsewhere on the stretcher: Net menders by Katwijk.
Akkeringa lived and worked, among others, in Katwijk aan Zee and painted the subject of the net menders several times. The depiction in this painting thus fits remarkably well within his well-known themes.
