Martinus Leonardus Middelhoek (Zwijndrecht, 29 April 1898 – Brielle, 4 October 1986) was a versatile Dutch painter, etcher, draughtsman and illustrator. He belonged to a well-known family of artists and was the father of painter Piet Middelhoek.
Middelhoek grew up in Zwijndrecht and in his early years initially worked as a carpenter. His passion, however, lay in art, and he decided to devote himself entirely to painting. He completed a professional art education at the Academy of Fine Arts and Technical Sciences in Rotterdam. During his studies at the evening academy he received lessons from, among others, the renowned teacher and artist.
His entire career largely took place in and around Zwijndrecht and Brielle, the town where he lived and worked permanently from around 1969. Throughout his career Middelhoek remained faithful to a figurative and traditional style.
Middelhoek was primarily known for his atmospheric landscapes, cityscapes, harbors and portraits. Much of his work reflects the typically Dutch atmosphere of water-rich villages, windmills and historic streets.
