Description from the seller
Large and evocative oil painting on panel signed “Civita Medici” at the bottom right, datable to the first half of the XX century.
The work depicts a lively scene of maritime life, with numerous fishermen engaged in recovering the large nets directly in the coastal waters. The figures, distributed among the boats and the sea, animate the composition and convey with immediacy the everyday, popular character of the fishermen’s work.
Particularly interesting is the rendering of the sea, the true protagonist of the piece. The artist alternates blue, turquoise and green tones with a decidedly more impasto brushwork in correspondence with the waves, where the color is applied in substantial thickness to create the white crests and the foam.
In the background the composition opens toward the horizon, with some sailing vessels and the architectures of the coast, while the light reflects on the water’s surface creating depth and luminosity.
The large horizontal format, 116,5 x 58,5 cm for the panel, contributes to the panoramic character of the scene and allows the artist to develop a detailed choral representation, rich in figures, boats and nets.
At the bottom right there is the signature, readable as “Civita Medici.” Not having been able to locate reliable biographical information about the author at present, the attribution is proposed on the basis of the reading of the clearly visible and photographically documented signature.
The painting is housed within a large shaped wooden frame, with a dark finish and gilded details, particularly suitable for the subject and the important dimensions of the work.
Author: Civita Medici (?)
Signature: Civita Medici, at the bottom right
Technique: oil on panel
Subject: fishermen at work, boats and nets on the coast
Era: first half of the twentieth century
Frame dimensions: 128 x 70 cm
Canvas dimensions: 116,5 x 58,5 cm
The painting features particularly impasto painting in several areas of the surface, especially in the depiction of waves and sea foam, as clearly visible in the detail photographs.
A work of strong decorative impact, interesting both for its important dimensions and for the suggestive subject tied to the life and traditions of Italian maritime communities.
The conditions are documented in detail by the photographs, which are an integral part of the description. Signs of time and use compatible with the era are present.
Tracked insured shipping and proper packaging.
