Paul Mansouroff (Pavel Mansurov, 1896-1983), painter of the Russian avant-garde.
Composition, Nice, March 18, 1974.
Original drawing in coloured pencils on paper. Dedicate, signed and dated by hand in the lower left corner: “To my dear friend Yves Guérin, with feeling and full respect, Paul Mansouroff”; inscribed in the lower right corner “Nice, 18/3/74”.
A vertical grid of rectangles in green, yellow, red, black and pale blue, framed by blue bands, two squares marked with a pair of white discs: a simplified suprématiste language. Mansouroff was a colleague of Malevich and Tatlin at the Institute of Artistic Culture in Petrograd (1921-28), emigrated to Paris in 1928 and lived in Nice from 1970 until his death. His work is represented in the MoMA and the Centre Pompidou.
Provenance: Yves Guérin’s Golden Book, compiled between 1963 and 1992.
