De le lettere di M. Claudio Tolomei libri sette. Con nuova aggiunta ristampate, & con somma diligenza ricorrette.

Claudio Tolomei (1492–1556) – De le lettere di M. Claudio Tolomei libri sette. Con nuova aggiunta ristampate, & con somma diligenza ricorrette.
Venice (In Vinegia), Domenico Giglio, 1558.
Attractive and complete 16th-century Venetian edition of the celebrated collection of letters by the Italian Renaissance humanist Claudio Tolomei.
Printed in Venice by Domenico Giglio in 1558, with the printer's woodcut device on the title page and again at the end, and numerous fine woodcut decorated and historiated initials throughout the text.
Collation: 296 + [8] leaves. Complete.
The final Tavola, register and colophon are all present. The colophon reads:
IN VINEGIA, Appresso Domenico Giglio. 1558.
The volume is preserved in an early vellum binding with raised sewing bands and attractive red-coloured edges. The binding shows age-related wear, staining and some small wormholes, entirely consistent with its age. The text block is generally remarkably well preserved.
Interesting Italian provenance.
The title page bears an early manuscript ownership inscription reading “Marc’ Antonio Mosconi”. On the front flyleaf is a separate old inscription “Palazzo Mosconi”, accompanied by additional contemporary/early manuscript notes.
The Mosconi name is associated with an old Northern Italian family and with a historic Palazzo Mosconi in Verona. The precise identity of the former owner Marc’ Antonio Mosconi, and the relationship of these inscriptions to that family, have not been conclusively established. The inscriptions are therefore offered here as an interesting historical provenance worthy of further research.
A particularly appealing Renaissance volume combining an important Italian humanist text, Venetian printing, an early vellum binding, woodcut decoration and intriguing Italian provenance.
Condition: complete. Early vellum binding with wear, soiling, small defects and worming as shown. Red edges preserved. Some age-related staining, spotting and occasional marks internally, but overall a very attractive and well-preserved copy for a book printed in 1558. Please study the photographs carefully; they form an integral part of the description.
