AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

RABELAIS, François
The Works of Mr. François Rabelais, Doctor of Medicine. Augmented by the Life of the Author, & by some Remarks on his Life & on History. With the Key & the explanation of all the difficult words
In Brussels, At Henri Frix, opposite the Madelene [sic], 1659 (M. DC. LIX.)

Classic edition in two volumes of the works of François Rabelais (including the adventures of Gargantua and Pantagruel), enriched with a biography of the author, historical notes, as well as the “key” indispensable for understanding the hidden meaning of the characters and the difficult vocabulary of the great Renaissance author.

Printed in Brussels by Henri Frix in 1659, this counterfeit edition from the Netherlands is particularly sought after by bibliophiles for its elegant typography and its two-tone title pages (red and black) adorned with a vignette of an armillary sphere.

The copy bears the ex-libris of Max Cointreau’s collection on marbled boards.

Full brown morocco of the period, spine with raised bands richly decorated with the gilded floral motifs in the compartments and title pieces in havana, speckled edges. Minor signs of wear of use and minor rubbing on the headcaps and corners, but the whole is solid, elegant and authentic.

Paper generally very clean, fresh, with superb title pages in red and black, well complete in both volumes.

Beautiful copy of this rare edition.
