Antique Art Deco wall barometer with thermometer, circa 1920–1930, in oak wood with metal fittings, from the Netherlands.

AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Antique Art Deco wall barometer with thermometer – oak – Dutch-language dial – circa 1920–1930

A particularly decorative antique wall barometer with thermometer, executed in beautiful warm oak and presumably dating from the period circa 1920–1930. The elongated, strongly geometric form with a stepped top and rounded lower part fits nicely with Dutch Art Deco and also shows influences of the Amsterdam School.

Comparable solid oak wall barometers with Dutch-language dial and thermometer are dated in the trade and in specialized collections to around the 1920s; even on Catawiki, similar oak examples from 1920–1930 are described as Art Deco and Amsterdam School.

At the center is the round aneroid barometer. This type of barometer works mechanically and does not require a mercury column for measuring air pressure. The aneroid barometer was patented in 1843/1844 by the French instrument maker Lucien Vidie and subsequently grew into a widely used compact measuring instrument.

The light Dutch-language dial is unusually attractive in execution. Surrounding it are the classic weather indicators:

Storm – Rain or Wind – Changeable – Good Weather – Steady

The scale runs from about 69 to 79, with 76 at the center. Through the open core of the dial, part of the mechanical barometerwork is visible, giving this specimen an extra technical and decorative appearance.

Above the barometer is a separate classic glass thermometer mounted, equipped with two scales: Celsius and Fahrenheit. The combination of an aneroid barometer and a C/F thermometer was characteristic of such early 20th-century wall weather stations.

The wooden housing also deserves attention. The oak has a beautiful pronounced grain and a warm honey-brown color. The stepped, almost architectural crown, the slender middle section, and the rounded forms around the barometer and lower part create a balanced Art Deco silhouette.
