Title: Road works near Mount Fuji, Fujikawaguchiko, Japan, 1999
Chris Steele-Perkins/Magnum Photos
a British photographer, 1947-2025
Chris Steele-Perkins (b. 1947) is one of the most prominent British documentary photographers and has been a member of the world-famous Magnum Photos agency since 1979. He gained international recognition through his compelling and deeply human reports on urban poverty, subcultures (as in his groundbreaking book The Teds) and social flashpoints in Britain. In addition to his socially critical work in his homeland, extended projects took him to developing countries as well as to Africa, Central America, the Lebanon and Afghanistan. Another significant milestone in his body of work is his long, deeply personal photographic engagement with Japan. His works are characterized by an uncompromising sense of social realities and a high level of visual storytelling, making them valuable collectibles of contemporary photographic art.
