Title: West Bay, Dorset, England, 1996

Martin Parr
British, born 1952

Martin Parr was born in 1952 in Epsom, Surrey. As a boy, his interest in photography was nurtured by his grandfather George Parr, who himself was an avid amateur photographer.
Parr studied photography at Manchester Polytechnic from 1970 to 1973 and taught until the early 1990s. In the early 1980s he began to document the lives of the British working class amid change. Through his characteristic social documentation he gained international recognition and, in 1994, despite debates about his provocative style, became a member of Magnum Photos.
For Parr, the moral impoverishment and absurdity of everyday life mean that we can only find salvation through a certain sense of humor. The banal, the boredom, and the meaninglessness of modernity are depicted in works such as “Bored Couples” and “Common Sense.”
In 2002 Phaidon published the monograph Martin Parr. A major retrospective of Parr’s work was initiated by the Barbican Art Gallery in London and subsequently shown at the Museo Nacional de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid, at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris, and at the Deichtorhallen in Hamburg.
Parr was appointed Professor of Photography at the University of Wales in 2004 and served in the same year as Guest Artistic Director of the Rencontres d'Arles. More recently he has developed an interest in filmmaking and has begun to use his photography in various contexts such as fashion and advertising.
