Wooden dark-finish storage box with a Relieves Costumbristas relief, dating to 1950–1960, measuring 14 cm high by 27 cm wide and 15 cm deep, made in Spain, in good used condition, titled Marinera.
Description from the seller
Dark wood decorative box made around the turn of the 19th to the 20th century, a piece with a marked artisanal character that combines functionality and sculptural storytelling through a careful relief decoration inspired by the maritime world. Its sober and robust design responds to the tradition of storage boxes and chests for domestic use, enriched with allegorical or genre scenes intended to evoke trades, traditions, and ways of life linked to the sea.
The front of the box is dominated by an elaborate carved relief representing two sailors seated facing each other inside a room. The scene conveys a sense of intimacy and everyday life, showing the characters in full dialogue or sharing a common activity, while various nautical elements integrated into the composition reinforce the maritime theme. The architectural background and the details of the furniture add depth to the carving, demonstrating remarkable modeling work for a piece of popular character.
The central lock preserves a striking metal escutcheon with a cut-out contour, introducing an attractive contrast with the dark tone of the wood. The sides are decorated with molded panels of simple lines that visually balance the richness of the front relief, while the slightly cantilevered lid adds solidity and elegance to the whole.
The wood presents a dark patina acquired over time that enhances the volumes of the relief and accentuates the historical character of the piece. This finish, together with natural signs of use and aging, contributes to its authenticity and decorative appeal.
Due to its nautical theme, the quality of its reliefs, and its aesthetics linked to late 19th and early 20th-century craftsmanship, this box constitutes an interesting collectible piece, ideal for lovers of nautical decor as well as collectors of objects of European folk tradition and decorative arts. Its presence adds personality and historical evocation to libraries, studies, coastal homes, or interiors with a maritime inspiration.
Certified shipping and good packaging.
