Scène de port, an original oil on canvas painting by BERMAN (XX), dating to 1930–1940, France, in the Classique style, sold with frame.
Description from the seller
Oil painting on canvas depicting a port scene with fishing boats, a fisherman's hut and reflections on the water.
The work features a particularly rich pictorial texture and strong impasto, notably on the vessels, the building and the reflections on the water, giving the composition a relief and a very interesting presence.
The painting is signed “BERMAN” at the bottom right.
The signature and the maritime subject have led to considering a possible attribution to Léonid Berman (1896–1976), a Russian-born artist who worked in France and the United States and who is known in particular for his harbor, boat and fisherman scenes. This attribution, however, is not certified and the work is offered as a painting signed BERMAN.
The painting shows craquelure and some areas of missing material, visible especially in the sky and parts of the composition, bearing witness to its age. The overall piece nevertheless retains a very beautiful decorative presence.
The work is presented in an antique carved wooden frame, patinated by time.
