Description from the seller
Beautiful set of three nineteenth-century French works on natural history, primarily concerned with animals, birds, reptiles, and fishes. The volumes are illustrated with numerous black engravings, some off-text, characteristic of educational and popular science works aimed at youth in the nineteenth century.
1. The Picturesque Buffon of Youth
Instructive and entertaining tableaux of the history of animals, containing descriptions of the manners and habits of mammals, birds, fishes, and reptiles.
Paris, Librairie de J. Langlumé.
Publisher's cloth binding in blue percaline with a gilt title.
Work illustrated with zoological engravings.
One comparable copy is described with 296 pages and 12 engravings; copies of this title are dated approximately to the years 1865-1880 depending on the edition.
2. J.-J. Bourassé – Natural History of Birds, Reptiles and Fishes – 1863
Tenth edition, Tours, Alfred Mame et Cie, printers- booksellers. Work approved by the Council of Public Instruction. Numerous zoological engravings, including eagles, vultures and other birds, reptiles and fishes. Publisher's blue percaline binding with a gilt title.
3. Volume of natural history in an elegant green binding richly ornamented with gilt motifs.
The works cover different animal families: birds, mammals, reptiles and fishes.
Many engravings illustrate the various species: raptors, owls, exotic birds, mammals, reptiles and fishes. Several plates show multiple animals on a single page.
The photographs notably show pages devoted to the lion, the jaguar, birds of prey, reptiles, and fishes.
Decorative bindings typical of the nineteenth century, especially interesting for an antique library or a collection devoted to Buffon and natural history.
Condition:
An antique set showing normal signs of age and use: wear to bindings, rubbing, foxing, stains and marks on some pages, as well as a few visible fragilities. The photographs allow a precise appreciation of the general state of the works.
The flaws and signs of time have intentionally been preserved and are visible in the photographs.
A beautiful decorative and documentary set of nineteenth-century natural history, with a large number of illustrations and engravings.
