Description from the seller
A Rare Pair of Baroque Brass Candlesticks with Pierced Tracery – Baltic Sea Region, 17th Century
A rare pair of heavy cast brass (yellow copper) baluster candlesticks originating from the Baltic Sea region, dating to the second half of the 17th century (circa 1650–1700).
Characterized by substantial proportions and distinctive regional styling, this model exemplifies the high-baroque brass-founding traditions of the northern Hanseatic and Baltic ports.
Design and Typology
Baluster Stem: The lathe-turned stem is articulated with knops and ring mouldings, terminating in a cylindrical nozzle with a broad, flat collar.
Pierced Ajour Gallery: Positioned directly above the domed foot is a thick, square openwork plate decorated with stepped geometric cut-outs, a hallmark characteristic of Baltic high-baroque candlesticks.
Base and Feet: The domed spreading base displays a scalloped square profile resting on four solid bracket feet.
Construction and Technique
Sand-Cast Brass: Solidly cast in thick brass with visible lathe-turning rings and tool marks from the finishing process.
Sectional Assembly: Constructed from separate castings joined by an internal central threaded rod and secured with a nut within the hollow base.
Weight: At approximately 1,320 grams each, both pieces offer exceptional heft and stability.
Condition Report
Structural Integrity: Both candlesticks stand completely firm, straight, and stable on their original feet. Nozzle Detail: The nozzle of the right-hand candlestick features an irregular loss/breakout around the original wax ejector hole. Surface and Patina: Preserved with a warm brass luster, exhibiting minor surface marks and age-appropriate signs of historic use.
Underside: Traces of dried white polish residue remain within the deep cast recesses of the hollow foot. Specifications
