Description from the seller
Flemish School (17th-18th century). The Merry Drinker. Oil on canvas mounted on a secondary canvas (doubled). Size without frame 55.5 x 42.5 cm. Including frame 74 x 62 cm. The painting and the frame are in good condition.
Beautiful and characterful oil painting on canvas, depicting The Merry Drinker. Flemish School, 17th/18th century. The painting and the frame are in good condition.
The painting shows a well-dressed, seated man with a broad smile raising his glass. In his other hand he holds a ceramic jug. The lively facial expression, the warm palette, and the strong light-dark contrast give the scene a particularly atmospherically rich and somewhat humorous character.
The subject fits within the rich Flemish and North European tradition of genre scenes with inn-goers, drinkers, and other figures from daily life. Such scenes were popular in the 17th and 18th centuries for their liveliness and human character.
The work is executed in oil on canvas. The canvas has in the past been professionally doubled, a traditional restoration method in which the original canvas is reinforced with a second canvas (see photo).
