2 volumes in wraps, 253, 217 pages + table of contents. Printed on the presses of Ducros and Colas, master printers in Paris. A table of illustrators cited in the text, a table of authors and volumes cited in the text, a table of reproductions and a table of plates (out-of-text) at the end of each volume: T1. 189 reproductions + 33 plates, T2. 180 reproductions + 83 plates. Illustrations in the text and plates in color and in black and white. This volume was printed in 500 copies on vellum stock, numbered 1 to 500. Copy No. 338. Spine cracked in Volume 2.
CLEMENT-JANIN Hilaire Noël Sébastien Clément, known as Clément-Janin (pen name of his father who wrote in the Burgundian press) (1862-1947) The editor’s presentation choices are set out at the front of the work in an “Editor’s Note” in which he presents the editor as the one who “coordinates the relations between the author, the illustrator and the printer. He is the true architect of the book.”
