Pauli Aeginetae Libri Septem by Paulus Aegineta, a Latine, original-language medical work printed in Basileae in 1538, bound in full parchment with a spine label, 637 pages, 22 by 15 cm, in one volume of seven books and in good, usable condition.
Description from the seller
Solid binding in full parchment rigid binding. Paper label with handwritten title applied to the spine. On the lower edge, the author's name handwritten in an ancient hand.
[22] including front., 637, [5]
The most important medical collection of the last of the great Byzantine physicians. The chapters on obstetrics and on teeth are of great significance. The studies on gout, poisons, and cures are authoritative.Paolo of Aegina, known in Latin as Paulus Ægineta, was a Byzantine physician of the 7th century, born on the island of Aegina between 620 and 630 and died between 680 and 690. Along with Oribasius (4th century) and Aetius of Amida (6th century), he is the last of the three great Greek physicians of late antiquity. He was the most important doctor of his time and a skilled surgeon. The work summarizes Greco-Roman medical thinking and the Galenic tradition, playing a fundamental role in transmitting classical medicine to physicians of the Islamic world and Europe. The work is divided into seven books: I. Hygiene and nutrition; II. The different types of fever; III. Diseases classified by location, from head to toe, including gynecology and obstetrics; IV. External diseases and intestinal parasites; V. Bites, poisons, and toxins; VI. Surgery (a book that has become a classic of the field); VII. Materia medica and matters of weights and measures.
Beautiful printer’s mark on the title page restored with a paper spike. Double ex libris applied to the guard. Fading of the upper margin of the first 30 leaves and of the last quarter of the volume which never compromises the text. A few pages browned. Nevertheless a copy in good condition, complete and usable.
Rare.
