Adriaen van der Werff (Kralingen, January 21, 1659 – Rotterdam, November 12, 1722) was a Dutch painter, sculptor and architect.
Biography
Born in Kralingen, near Rotterdam, he was a pupil of Eglon van der Neer. A precocious artist, by the age of 17 he was already working independently in Rotterdam, painting religious and mythological scenes as well as portraits, and he quickly achieved considerable fame. In 1697 he was named court painter to the Palatine Elector John William; the latter granted him a pension and conferred upon him a noble title.
Contemporaries regarded Van der Werff as the greatest Dutch painter of his time, although in the 19th century he was accused of betraying the Dutch naturalistic tradition.
His younger brother, Pieter van der Werff (1661–1722), was his pupil.
