Description from the seller
An absolutely (great) oil-on-panel masterpiece by the Belgian artist Charles Verlat (1824-1890)
The painting tells a wonderful story; at first glance it seems that the cat is being strangled by a rope attached to a hook. The mice think the same and dance with joy!
But…
When you study the work closely you see that it is an exceedingly sly cat; he keeps his exit between the rope and his neck, and with his hind leg he stands on an elevated base, so that in reality he is standing without being strangled. One eye slightly open, he keeps an eye on the mice to strike at a carefree moment!
All this shows a genius conceit of the artist, and it is painted in extremely detailed, life-size form. The scale of the cat, the mice, the pots, cheese, onions and the wine bottle. Everything matches reality and is painted in the correct proportions!
For connoisseurs and collectors of Charles Verlat’s works, this is a chance to acquire an astonishing piece!
Panel size 81x94 cm
Overall size 104x115 cm
