Description from the seller

Duo Faïence Villeroy & Boch Art Provençal - Vallauris & Rocat - c. 1960

Description
Set of two glazed earthenware pieces from the mid-20th century, forming a remarkable artistic diptych. These pieces offer two complementary perspectives of the legendary Provençal square of Saint-Paul-de-Vence and its famous Grand Fontaine.
A superb visual frame within a frame: the fountain’s foreground under the arch directly answers the overall view of the square, where the porch can be seen in the background.

The lot includes:
1. The Grand Fontaine under the Porch (Signed Vallauris): A bright, hand-painted work, rich in contrasts and Mediterranean colors. The original inscription reads "la fontaine S(ain)t Paul," accompanied by the explicit signature of the Vallauris workshop at the bottom right. Piece executed on a tile of raw earthenware from the Villeroy & Boch factory (stamping engraved on the back).

2. The Village Square and its Fountain (Signed Rocat): A remarkable graphic work, typical of the 1960s, blending line drawing with black ink and touches of orange-red enamel. Signed Rocat at the bottom left, a prominent name in Côte d’Azur decor. Designed on a raw tile from the historic La Ferté-Gaucher factory (Villeroy & Boch Group), as evidenced by the circular V&B logo engraved on the back. The piece comes with its four original felt pads to be used as a trivet, housed in a magnificent brutalist black metal frame equipped for wall mounting.

• Condition: Good vintage overall. A beautiful patina of use with the natural crazing of the old enamel, confirming its authenticity. Gentle cleaning preserved the vibrancy of the decorations.

Dimensions & Weight:
• Tile 1 (Vallauris - The Saint Paul Fountain):
• Dimensions: 20 cm x 10 cm
• Weight: 210 g
• Back marks: Engraved under glaze "Villeroy & Boch", numbers "75" and "51", uppercase letter "A". Fitted with a discreet wall hanger on the back.
• Tile 2 / Trivet (Rocat - Place of the Village):
• Total dimensions (with black frame): 21.5 cm x 21.5 cm
• Tile alone dimensions: 15.3 cm x 15.3 cm
• Weight: 470 g
• Back marks: "La Ferté Gaucher", "Made in France", number "60", uppercase letter "D" and official circular "V&B" logo. Equipped with 4 original protective pads and a wall frame.
