Description from the seller
Emmanuelle Pellet - Study After Velázquez's Las Meninas
Acrylic and oil on canvas
H: 30 cm W: 24 cm
Unique piece, hand-painted, signed and numbered
About the work:
This study revisits the figure of Infanta Margarita-Teresa, at the center of Las Meninas (1656, Prado Museum). Without aiming for a literal copy, Emmanuelle Pellet preserves the gravity of the gaze and the softness of the modeling, then transposes the scene into a personal palette: the dark backgrounds become a dialogue between deep black, pale gray, and turquoise.
The flesh tones are rendered with a gradient, the hair and the pink ribbon in freer brushstrokes, in the spirit of Spanish 17th-century painting. The result is a portrait of a child that is at once intimate and enigmatic.
About the artist:
Art historian by training, Emmanuelle Pellet studied at the École du Louvre and then at the Sorbonne, before being awarded the Agrégation in Visual Arts (3rd rank). After several years of teaching, she joined the Louvre Museum as head of educational outreach.
Her career today fuels a personal body of work where painting mastery dialogues with a deep culture of imagery and art history. Her creations have been shown in galleries in Paris, London, Singapore and Mauritius, and have been the subject of numerous publications. They are now in private collections in Europe, North America, Asia and the Indian Ocean.
