Gregorio Gamarra was one of the most important painters of Cusco and belonged to Bernardo Bitti’s circle. With a predominantly Mannerist style, this could be the best example of the transition that Bitti’s style underwent in the Andes.

Gregorio Gamarra (circa 1570-1642) Spanish painter active in the Viceroyalty of Peru during the 17th century, in La Paz (Bolivia) and Cusco (Peru).

Biography:

He arrived in Cusco from Potosí, painting in 1607 the Apparition of Saint Francis to Pope Nicholas V, which is located in the Church of La Recoleta in Cusco. In this place are also his Immaculate Conception and The Vision of the Cross, the latter based on an engraving by Sadeler.

In the city of La Paz he left several works such as the Virgin of Guadalupe, made in Cusco and signed in 1609, The Pardon (La Porciúncula), The Vision of the Car of Fire, and an Immaculate Conception with Saint Francis and Saint Diego located in the convent of San Francisco in the city. In the National Museum of Art is the Adoration of the Kings, based on an engraving by Sadeler. There is a "Virgin with the Child, Saint John and Saint Joseph" in a private collection (the one we are discussing), a Christ tied to a pillar at the University of La Paz, and a Death of Saint Joseph in the convent of the Carmelite.

The works of the 17th-century Cusqueño painter Gregorio Gamarra (c. 1570-1642) are valued in the colonial art market, with recent auction prices ranging from €4,000 to €10,000 (approx. $4,300 - $10,800 USD) for small-format oil on copper, reaching records above $68,000 USD for outstanding works from the Cusco school.

Artwork Details

Title: Immaculate Conception surrounded by Saint Francis and Saint Dominic with the Infant Jesus.
Technique: Oil on copper.
Style: Cusco School, 17th century.
Attribution: Attributed to Gregorio Gamarra, a key painter in the transition from Mannerism to the Baroque in the Viceroyalty of Peru.
Description: The piece presents the classical iconography of the Virgin Mary flanked by the founders of the Franciscan and Dominican orders, a composition typical of devotional veneration in the viceroyalty destined for private prayer due to its copper support, a common model in the Counter-Reformation period in which they were painted.

The Virgin of Gamarra beside the Child establish visual and communicative contact with the viewer. Its small format is for personal devotion, to be held in our hands and observed up close, allowing us to contemplate it as a religious print.

Style: Gamarra is recognized as one of the most important painters of Cusco and influential in Bernardo Bitti’s circle.

Subject matter: Mainly Religious Art, including Virgins, Saints, and Passion subjects.

Universidad de los Andes

Over time, there are no major records about his origin - though it is suggested he was born in Spain - but it is known that he was active between 1601 and 1642, painting in La Paz, Cusco and Potosí, where today some of his paintings are located.
