Description from the seller
Oil on canvas "View of the Seine with Notre Dame", 20th century - France
Magnificent oil on canvas "View of the Seine with Notre Dame" created in mid-century France. It is presented, with great technical originality, a evocative view of Paris. The composition uses a marked diagonal perspective defined by the left-hand quay, which effectively guides the viewer's gaze toward a small moored boat and the course of the Seine. In the middle ground, a multi-arched bridge crosses the waters, serving as a transition to the background, where the unmistakable gothic silhouette of Notre-Dame Cathedral rises with its towers and spire cut against the sky. The work stands out for its expressionist and impasto technique, executed with loose and energetic brushstrokes that suggest the use of a spatula to add texture and volume to the surface. However, what draws the most attention is the use of black, as if it were a drawing. The color palette is sober, built from neutral tones such as grays, ochres, browns, and earth tones. This tonal range is subtly interrupted by small, livelier accents of red and white on the boat, which act as focal points and give dynamism to the scene. Finally, fragmented lighting on the water and the overcast sky cooperate to create a nostalgic atmosphere, probably Paris in autumn.
Signed in the lower left corner. The frame and the glass are a gift.
