Description from the seller
This salt-glazed and enameled stoneware set from the famous pottery region of Bouffioulx in Belgium is a remarkable testimony to mid-twentieth century artisanal productions, precisely datable from the 1950s to the 1960s. Both hollow pieces share a coordinated aesthetic characterized by a traditional wheel-thrown technique and a typical flamed decoration, combining a glossy brown enameled base and an upper part covered with a nuanced cream-beige glaze, which reveals superb effects of natural bluish drips and splashes from the salt firing. The lot consists of a large potbelly teapot or coffee pot equipped with its removable lid topped with a conical grip knob, featuring a short spout and a large high handle, as well as a milk jug or creamer with a matching profile fitted with a similar handle. Under their respective base, both pieces each bear the handwritten signature manually incised directly into the fresh clay Marcellus Aubry, confirming the hand of the master ceramist on the entirety of this set. The large piece displays dimensions of 18 cm in height, 30 cm in total width including the spout and the handle for a maximum diameter of 16 cm, all for a weight of 1550 g. The small piece measures 9.5 cm in height, 17 cm in width and 10 cm in diameter for a weight of around 400 g. The condition of this stoneware duo is excellent, the glazed surface retaining all its original shine and nuances without any cracks, chips or restorations to report on either signed piece.
