Portrait of an ecclesiastic - NO RESERVE, XVII century, oil on canvas, Italy, sold with frame.

AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Ancient painting, oil on canvas, dating from the 17th century, depicting Portrait of an ecclesiastic.

Elegant portrait of an ecclesiastic depicted in half-length, in dark attire with a broad white collar, on a brown background almost entirely neutral.
The composition, intentionally essential, concentrates attention on the sitter’s features, characterized by a naturalistic rendering and an intense expressiveness of the gaze. The light, focused on the face and hands, emerges from the dark background and creates a strong presence of the figure.
The painting aligns with the strand of Roman portraiture of the full 17th century, in particular within the classicist and naturalistic culture developed in the milieu of Andrea Sacchi (Rome, 1599–1661). The sobriety of the composition, the luminous construction of the face, the restrained palette, and the attention to the psychological characterization of the sitter find meaningful parallels in Sacchi’s portraiture, the author of important ecclesiastical effigies, among which the famous Portrait of Monsignor Clemente Merlini in the Galleria Borghese.
The quality of the facial characterization and the particular austerity of the representation give the work notable interest within 17th‑century Roman painting.

The work is presented in generally fairly good condition, with signs of aging consistent with its age. There are some scattered areas of restoration, as well as craquelure and cracks on the painting surface, which however do not compromise the legibility of the depiction. The craquelure is homogeneous and attributable to the period, with no signs of active detachment. The original canvas has a lining in good condition, which ensures proper tensioning and support. Overall the work is solid, well preserved and with a coherent historical patina, testifying to its authenticity and natural conservation evolution over time.

The painting is accompanied by a beautiful frame of classic taste but of relatively recent era. Defects, losses and signs of time are noted, along with restorations and reinforcements. The frame is included as a courtesy and does not constitute an integral part of the artwork; any damage to it will not constitute grounds for complaint or cancellation of the order.

Dimensions of the painting: 52.5 x 43.5 cm - Dimensions of the frame: 63 x 54 cm

The work is accompanied by a photographic certificate of authenticity, as required by current law.
