Description from the seller

Item Description:
This is a lidded oval porcelain box produced by Shobido Honten's Kisen kiln (賞美堂本店・其泉窯), a well-regarded Arita ware workshop in Saga Prefecture, Japan. The underside bears the mark "日肥其泉 昭和年製" (Nihi Kisen, made in the Showa era) together with the kiln's ceramic seal, dating the piece to the Showa period (1926-1989).

The box is decorated in the Ko-Imari (古伊味) style, one of the classic decorative traditions of Arita ware, combining rich gold overglaze (kinsai) with polychrome enamels in red, blue, green and white. The lid and body are adorned with peony and chrysanthemum blossoms on gilt ground, bordered by a red scalloped panel and a diaper-pattern blue band at the rim. A butterfly-shaped cartouche with a green ground and floral motif appears on the side of the body. The interior of the box and the underside of the lid are finished in plain white porcelain with a small floral motif on the lid's underside.

The lid has good, substantial weight and fits securely onto the body. This piece would suit use as a decorative trinket box, sweets container, or small accessory box.

The box comes without its original outer box (tomobako).
