Description from the seller
“TH. Burnetii Telluris Theoria Sacra, Originem & Mutationes Generalis Orbis Nostri“, Thomas Burnet, 1699.
For sale is an edition of the influential cosmogonical-theological work by the English scholar and theologian Thomas Burnet (1635–1715). In it he develops a natural-philosophy-influenced theory about the origin and development of the Earth, in which the biblical Flood is particularly central to his explanation of the world.
The work contains a fold-out plate with representations of the western and eastern hemispheres (comparison copies frequently show two fold-out plates, each with a separate illustration). In addition, there is a frontispiece as well as twelve of twelve illustrations, some of which are full-page. Moreover, there are several woodcut initials and decorative embellishments throughout the text.
Bound in a contemporary parchment binding with a handwritten spine title. The pages are slightly browned and untrimmed. The multi-fold plate has a crack, and there are occasional light foxing spots. Overall, in good condition.
