Hans Beers (born 1946) created La Naissance Cosmique, a surreal gouache on paper from 1965, 59.5 × 44 cm, signed “HBeers”, an original edition depicting a religious theme, of Dutch origin, sold by the owner or a dealer, in good condition.
Description from the seller
Hans Beers (1946) – The Cosmic Birth. Woman-Planet, pyramid and poinsettia, early 1960s
Technique: Gouache and opaque paint on paper
Dimensions: 59.5 × 44 cm
Signature: Signed « HBeers » on the right edge of the pyramid
Condition: Good overall condition. Vivid and contrasted colors. Studio marks and stains on the verso, typical of a sheet from this period. Front without tears.
Presentation: Sold unframed, ready to receive a frame of your choice.
Description
On a deep black background, Hans Beers raises a gray pyramid, like a temple or a portal.
Inside, three silhouettes merge: on the left, a nude woman whose body is covered with planets, stars and a Earth placed at the lower abdomen; in the center, a ochre figure, more opaque, like a solar shadow; on the right, a pale face from which a sun radiates, light-blue hair studded with stars.
Her feet rest on a large pink-magenta flower, close to a poinsettia, whose leaves open into the void. From the base of the pyramid hang long, wavy ribbons — white, green, yellow, red, blue — like tresses, energy falls, or veils of light.
The contrast between the black background, the cold geometry of the triangle, and the chromatic abundance of the figures creates a rare tension: birth, cosmos, body and vegetation meet in a single image.
A work of great mastery, where the gouache is laid with density, especially in the white relief ribbons. An intimate and monumental piece, typical of Beers’s surrealist universe.
Artist’s Biography
Hans Beers, Dutch painter born in 1946, trained at the St. Joost Academy in Breda (monumental design). He then settled in Antwerp, where he opened the Isabella Brant gallery in 1970.
From his early years, he developed a personal surrealist language: stylized figures, cosmic symbols, themes of birth, the zodiac, and the passage between real and imagined. His gouaches, rich in material textures, are sought after for their dreamlike imagery.
He exhibited in Breda, Antwerp, Deurne, Ghent, Amsterdam and several Belgian and Dutch towns. Hans Beers remains a significant figure of Belgian-Dutch figurative surrealism in the second half of the 20th century.
