I'm Waiting in the Lobby
Every grand hotel has one: a piano in the corner of the lobby and someone playing it while the world walks past.
Suitcases roll across the carpet. Tourists argue at the front desk about rooms that aren't ready. Phones ring and doors revolve. Almost nobody is listening. And yet the pianist plays as if he were on stage at Madison Square Garden, with the same focus and the same passion, because for a real musician the audience was never the point. It all starts in the heart, and it doesn't matter where the notes land.
Many of these players are great musicians. They come to work, sit down at the bench and slip out of their circumstances. The noise fades, the lobby disappears, and only the music is left.
That's the moment I wanted to paint. The piano curves around him like a wall, closing him into his own world. His eyes are shut and his head is tilted back, following something only he can hear. His body folds into an almost abstract geometry, as if the music had reshaped him from the inside. A glass of whisky waits on the edge of the keys, untouched for now. The patterned carpet and the green walls belong to the hotel, to everyone else. The circle of keys belongs to him alone.
He's waiting in the lobby, like everyone else. The difference is that he has already arrived somewhere.
