Vintage medical sterilization container (often called a sterilization cassette or “kasto”).

Made of aluminum or light metal.

Ventilation - Has holes or grills in the lid and bottom (often swiveling) so steam during the sterilization process could reach the instruments or gauze and then dry again.

Closure - Equipped with a metal clamp or slide closure and a bracket handle on the top to easily pick up the box.

Formerly used in doctors' offices, hospitals, or laboratories to keep surgical instruments, gauze, and dressings sterile.
Brands such as Aesculap produced such containers frequently.
Today they are also widely used as industrial décor items.
