First edition from 1753 in French, authored by Louis XV, titled Remontrances du Parlement au Roi + Tradition des Faits, a single bound volume in cuir with 552 pages on history and related topics, in good condition.
Description from the seller
Book from 1753 gathering;
- Remonstrances of the Parliament to the King (8 pp)
- Very humble and very respectful remonstrances (164 pp)
- Tradition of the facts (380 pp including Table 13 pp)
This work is a testimony of "the Jansenist crisis and the refusal of sacraments" that shakes France under Louis XV, a consequence of the bull Unigenitus Dei Filius of Pope Clement XI.
In 1753, the Parliament of Paris opposes the clergy on the question of spiritual authority and reminds the King:
- that royal sovereignty extends over all subjects, including bishops;
- that the Parliament is the guardian of the laws of the realm;
- that religious disturbances threaten public order and the stability of the State.
The gathered texts — Remonstrances, Tradition of the facts, Articles enacted — constitute a political manifesto affirming the Parliament’s role in the face of the pretensions of ecclesiastical power.
It is therefore a fundamental document for understanding the tensions between Monarchy, Church and Parliament in the 18th century. By defending a materially important "constitutional" role for the Parliament, this text and the reactions it will provoke actively contribute to the ruin of royal authority, which will develop in the following decades up to the great upheaval of the Revolution...
Format in-12
Red slices
Period binding: Full tan crushed morocco, spine with raised bands, ruled and fleuronné, cold tooling borders on the boards.
