Description from the seller
This important zoomorphic sculpture in crackled beige-glazed earthenware depicts a couple of pheasants perched on a rocky mound, a characteristic work of animalier productions from the Art Deco period made between 1925 and 1930. This piece is attributed to the famous sculptor and ceramist Louis Fontinelle, a leading figure of the interwar years renowned for his stylized representations of animals with streamlined and geometric forms. The two birds stand out for their fluid lines and stretched tails, perfectly matching the modernist dynamic typical of the artist's creations. The whole piece is finished with a beautiful glossy monochrome cream-white glaze, highlighting a network of fine regular crazing characteristic of the aging of earthenware. The object bears no handwritten or printed signature visible on the outer part, but the hollow reverse of its base bears the foundry reference or model number 147 incised directly into the mass during molding. The dimensions of this large-scale work are 30 cm in height, 53 cm in total length and 15 cm in width at the terrace level. The individual weight of the sculpture amounts to 2900 g. Regarding its condition, this animalier ceramic is in very good original overall condition, the surface preserving a remarkable shine with no transversal cracks, chips or restorations to report on the structure of the birds or the base .
