Oil painting Piedigrotta by Francesco Alfano (1959), Italy, 50 × 40 cm, signed, depicting a nocturnal scene, sold with a frame, in good condition.
Description from the seller
The scene depicts the famous Festa di Piedigrotta, one of the oldest and most cherished Neapolitan popular traditions, celebrated between September 7 and 8 around the sanctuary of Santa Maria di Piedigrotta.
Born as a religious celebration of the Madonna, in the course of the nineteenth century the festival transformed into a grand popular spectacle, able to gather devotion, music, show and daily life. Processions, musicians, allegorical floats, stalls, illuminations and fireworks animated the streets of Naples and the Mergellina shoreline.
Piedigrotta also played a fundamental role in the history of Neapolitan song, becoming in the nineteenth century one of the main places for the diffusion of Neapolitan popular music.
The painting embodies precisely this festive and choral character: a popular, noisy and luminous Naples, caught in the moment of the celebration, among music, crowds and plays of light.
