Vue ancienne de Lille, an oil on canvas painting by the French School (XX) from 1900–1910, 40 × 50 cm, depicting an urban landscape.
Description from the seller
French School – Old View of Lille – circa 1870–1880 – Oil on canvas – 50 × 40 cm
Beautiful oil on canvas from the French School, dating from the second half of the 19th century, circa 1870–1880, depicting a picturesque view of Lille, with a canal, stone bridge, and old houses.
The composition offers a remarkable urban atmosphere: a watercourse runs through the foreground, lined with houses with aged façades, while a vaulted stone bridge structures the center of the scene. In the background appear the city roofs and a slender bell tower, giving depth and character to the perspective.
The painting is executed with a generous and expressive brushwork, particularly visible in the façades, the reflections on the water, and the sky. The impastos add substantial body and relief to the whole. The palette, consisting of ochres, earth tones, grays, and orange hues, charmingly captures the atmosphere of the old quarters of northern France.
A signature is visible at the bottom right, seeming to read “Henry” or similar, but the artist remains uncertain. The work is therefore offered as a French School of the 19th century.
Characteristics:
* Artist: unidentified – French School
* Subject: old view of Lille, canal and bridge
* Technique: oil on canvas
* Era: circa 1870–1880
* Dimensions: 50 × 40 cm
* Signature: bottom right
* Canvas mounted on its old wooden frame
The canvas bears the typical signs of its age. It nevertheless preserves a beautiful decorative presence and a painting surface of particular interest.
A charming work, representative of French urban and picturesque views from the late 19th century, of interest both to a collector of old paintings and to an enthusiast of Lille’s history and heritage.
