Style and critical notes:
The painting magnificently embodies Haddon’s mastery in capturing light and the atmosphere of the Iberian peninsula. The composition is deftly orchestrated, using the arched portico in the foreground as a natural frame, opening onto a bright hilly landscape dominated by a walled village and a lush palm tree. The two women in traditional dress introduce an anecdotal and elegant element. The brushwork is rich and skilled, capable of balancing the shadowed areas of the patio with the vivid chromatic contrasts of nature basking in the sun, under a clear, bright sky.
Conditions:
• Overall condition: Excellent. The painted surface remains stable, with saturated, luminous colors that are well bound. No signs of color flaking or structural damage to the canvas are evident. The sumptuous contemporaneous frame, enhanced by an elegant fabric mat and carved gilt profiles featuring geometric and botanical motifs, is in excellent preservation but shows normal signs of age that attest to its authenticity. Please review carefully the attached photographs to assess surface details.
