Description from the seller
Kneeling feminine sculpture in solid Macassar ebony
Indonesia,
45 cm / 5 kg
Rare and imposing sculpture in solid Macassar ebony (Diospyros celebica), depicting a kneeling woman, naked torso, arms raised behind the head.
Unlike the many ebony sculptures with a uniform black of African origin (Makonde, etc.), this piece is Indonesian (Bali or Sulawesi).
Macassar ebony, originating from Sulawesi, is immediately recognizable by its spectacular grain: deep black bands contrasting with brown-gold and caramel streaks. This precious wood, dense and difficult to work, is rare and sought after. (traded rough at around 50 € per kg)
The sculpture, 45 cm tall and weighing 5 kg, is entirely carved from a single block. The braided hairstyle, the finely chiseled geometric belt, and the worked base testify to meticulous craftsmanship characteristic of Indonesian export workshops from the 1950s. The original polish beautifully highlights the wood grain.
