L'Art de Naviger by Claude-François Milliet de Dechales (1677) is a French original illustrated edition in two parts on navigation and seamanship, bound with 350 pages in a 23 × 19.5 cm format, in good condition despite age-related browning, water stains and worm damage largely outside the text, with missing pages 25–30 in the second part and a lightly restored spine.
Description from the seller
“L’Art de Naviger“, Claude-François Milliet de Dechales 1677.
Very Rare Work on the Art of Navigation and Practical Seafaring, in two volumes. Among other topics, it covers the determination of a ship’s course, the use of nautical instruments, as well as calculation and orientation at sea.
The first part contains numerous woodcuts in the text, and the second part includes full-page, partly fold-out tables.
The pages have aged somewhat yellowed. At the beginning up to about halfway there are some stronger water stains in the upper area. There are wormholes throughout the inner area of the pages. These are initially quite noticeable, lessen, and become stronger and larger again toward the end. They almost always lie outside the text and cause at most a small loss of characters.
Pages 25–30 are missing in the second part.
The binding has been lightly restored at the spine and is somewhat rubbed.
Collation: 10 leaves, 264 (recte 274) pages, 47 (of 53) numbered pages
Dimensions: 23 x 19.5 cm
