Description from the seller

Artist: Gérard Portielje (Belgium, 1856–1929)
Title: "The Chess Game"
Medium: Oil on wooden panel
Dimensions: 52 x 43 cm (34 x 26 cm without frame)
Signature: Lower left originally signed by the artist ("Gerard Portielje")

Condition:
Excellent, age-appropriate original condition. The painting captivates with its enormous attention to detail, vibrant colors, and shows no obvious retouchings. The representative, ornately decorated gilded frame is stable and shows two signs of aging/damage.

Provenance & Documentation:
A particular highlight for collectors is on the back of the wooden panel: An original, historic customs stamp of the Belgium-Luxembourg Economic Union (UEBL) from the border control station “Lommel Colony” (Customs and Excise Authority). This stamp is an excellent contemporary document that perfectly corroborates the authenticity and the artwork’s historical journey.
