Description from the seller
Turkman Antique Rug – Origin & Features
Turkman Rugs traditionally come from the Turkmen, a Turkic-speaking nomadic people who primarily live in Turkmenistan, Afghanistan and Uzbekistan. They are among the most well-known nomadic carpets of all time and are sought-after collectibles due to their distinctive patterns, deep colors, and their history.
Characteristic Features
Designs & Motifs:
The most famous pattern is the Göl – an octagonal, repeating medallion that served as an insignia for the respective tribe (e.g. Tekke-Göl, Yomut-Göl).
Frequently geometric border patterns and fine diamond- or hook-ornaments.
Many carpets have a continuous repeat pattern, sometimes with a field and corners.
Colors:
Dominant red tones (madder red, wine red, rust)
Accented with black-brown, indigo, ivory
Natural colors from plant and mineral pigments
Materials & Technique:
Hand-spun wool (pile and warp)
Fine knots, often Persian Senneh knots (asymmetric)
Tightly woven, sturdy yet supple
Antique Examples
Antique Turkman carpets are typically over 80–100 years old. They often show patina and signs of aging, which adds to their charm. True antique pieces can be recognized by, among other things:
Old, slightly irregular plant colors
Wear, but no synthetic shine
Original weaving techniques without modern repairs
