Description from the seller
Johannes Hermanus Barend Koekkoek
Amsterdam 1840 - 1912
Sailboats on the open sea
oil on canvas signed bottom left
Painting has been recently cleaned and is framed by Paul Gehring.
Dutch painter, belonging to the Koekkoek dynasty.
Jan H.B. Koekkoek was the third son of marine painter Hermanus Koekkoek (1815-1882) and, like his brothers, was educated by his father. The influence of his father is visible in the careful Romantic painting style and the fine detailing of his early seascapes and river views. Later, after his move in 1864 to Hilversum in Het Gooi, the cradle of the Larense School, he shifted to a looser brushwork. In a Hague School–influenced style he painted from that time mainly coastal and sea views and scenes from the fishing life.
Jan H.B. Koekkoek was in turn the teacher of his son Gerardus Johannes Koekkoek (1871-1956). He was a member of Arti et Amicitiae in Amsterdam. His work is to be found in various museums, including the Jan Cunen Museum in Oss and the Rijksprentenkabinet in Amsterdam.
The painting is carefully packed and sent by registered mail.
