The Théâtre de L. B. Picard de l’Académie française by Édouard Fournier is a French 1880 deluxe large‑paper edition with hand‑coloured plates, a leather binding, 777 pages, and a 285 × 200 mm format.
Description from the seller
PICARD, Louis-Benoît. Théâtre de L.B. Picard. Nouvelle édition, précédée d’une biographie de l’auteur par M. Édouard Fournier. Paris: Laplace, Sanchez et Cie, 1880. [xvi], 778 pp.
A large-paper copy, with the plates in two states. On heavy laid paper, 285 × 200 mm (ordinary copies c. 277 × 180 mm), partly uncut. With the 19 full-length portraits of the original actors in their roles, engraved by A. Gilbert after Ed. Follet, hand-coloured and lettered, each accompanied by a proof before letters in black on China paper laid down, mounted facing: 38 plates in all. We have traced no other copy with the plates in two states; ordinary copies contain the coloured suite only.
Three quarter deep red leather with raised bands and gilt titles and decoration to the spine. Marbled boards, but overall in very good state. The binding is very slightly weak to the front hinge, but still holding. It is starting to break at the front hinge, and would benefit from reinforcing. The paper seems to be of a higher quality than the regular edition of this work. Quite a few pages remain uncut. There is a little foxing, including to the plates, but much less than is generally found.
Overall, a lovely copy of a scarce work. Apparent first edition of this expanded and newly edited form.
28.5 x 20 cm.
Apart from the additional suite of plates, this conforms to WorldCat / OCLC: 457695666. BnF FRBNF31104106.
[xvi], 777 pages. The text in two columns.
Ed. Follet is the draughtsman: Edmond Follet, a French illustrator known for theatre costume and actors’ portraits. That suits a series of actors in their roles.
A. Gilbert is the engraver, almost certainly Achille Gilbert (1828–1899), a prolific reproductive engraver for Paris publishers.
And additional suite laid down with Chine - the printed plate is hand coloured.
Probably a deluxe copy, with the additional suite and hand colouring, but no publisher’s limitation.
This appears to be a little larger than and ordinary copy, so probably a deluxe large paper copy.
