Asmat necklace from West Papua, original field-collected in the 1970s, made of Job’s tears seeds and crocodile teeth, 38 cm high by 1.5 cm deep, containing 1 object and in excellent condition.
Description from the seller
This traditional necklace comes from the Asmat people of West Papua and was field collected in the 1970s\.
The necklace is composed primarily of Job’s tears (Coix lacryma\-jobi), natural seeds that have long been used throughout New Guinea for personal adornment\. Their naturally hard shell and central opening make them particularly suitable for stringing into necklaces and other body ornaments\.
Two crocodile teeth form the most striking elements of the necklace\. Crocodiles are important animals in the Asmat environment and occur frequently in Asmat imagery and material culture\. The combination of natural seeds and animal teeth gives the necklace the characteristic appearance of traditional Asmat body decoration\.
A genuine field\-collected example from the 1970s, showing the creative use of materials obtained directly from the surrounding natural environment\.
