Description from the seller
Johannes (Jan) Wilhelmus Engel is a typical example of a painter who gets even better as he grows older. For almost 20 years he has developed his own, highly realistic style and he now belongs to the best realists in the Netherlands.
Engel was born in Amsterdam and grew up in a turbulent artistic family, which after some wandering settled in Wapserveen, Drenthe.
As a child he was exposed early to artists of all kinds. He received his first advice from Jacques van Meegeren and Herre Hooghiemster. Later he studied Graphic Design at the Enschede Academy.
In painting with oil he trained himself partly, blessed as he is with a very great talent.
At the beginning of his development he was influenced by the Hague School, later he developed his own, more colorful, impressionistic style, while today he is mainly an almost romantic realist.
For subjects he chooses landscapes with cows and, on a larger scale, cityscapes. He has a particular fondness for subjects related to the French bohemian lifestyle around 1900.
In recent years he has also specialized in romantic beach scenes, usually with 2 or more playing children.
His realistic images of sparrows, tits and bullfinches are unique, highly sought after, and now fetch very high prices at auctions.
Jan Engel paints reality, but more beautiful than reality. The sun always shines, the snow is pure white. Cheerful children in colorful dresses on the beach, often with lots of soft blue. Well-fed black-and-white cows in the prime of their lives on lush green pastures. The most beautiful little birds with a splendid summer plumage.
Every observer becomes cheerful from it.
This work incl. frame is 27.5 x 26.5 cm, the panel size is +/- 18 x 18 cm.
