Strand gezicht, a 1990-2000 oil on canvas Impressionist painting by Jan Engel (Netherlands), original edition, hand-signed, sold by Galerie, with frame, measuring 27.5 × 26.5 cm.
Description from the seller
Johannes (Jan) Wilhelmus Engel is a textbook example of a painter who keeps getting better as he grows older. Over nearly 20 years he has developed his own very realistic style and is now among the best realist painters in the Netherlands.
Engel was born in Amsterdam and grew up in a turbulent artistic family, which, after some wandering, settled in Wapserveen, Drenthe.
As a child he was exposed early to artists of all kinds. He received his first advice from Jacques Van Meegeren and Herre Hooghiemster. Later he studied Graphic Design at the Enschede Academy.
In oil painting he largely trained himself, blessed as he is with a very great talent.
At the beginning of his development he was influenced by the Hague School; later he developed his own, more colorful, impressionist style, while today he is mainly an almost romantic realist.
He subjects himself to landscapes with cows and, on larger canvases, cityscapes. He has a particular fondness for subjects relating to the French bohemian lifestyle around 1900.
In recent years he has also specialized in romantic beach scenes, usually with two or more children playing.
His realistic depictions of sparrows, blue tits and goldfinches are unique, highly sought after, and now fetch very high prices at auctions.
Jan Engel paints reality, but more beautifully than reality. The sun always shines, the snow is perfectly white. Cheerful children in colorful dresses on the beach, often with lots of soft blue. Well-fed black-and-white cows in the prime of life on lush green pastures. The prettiest little birds with splendid summer plumage.
Every viewer leaves feeling cheerful.
This work, including the frame, measures 27.5 x 26.5 cm; the panel size is approximately 18 x 18 cm.
