Description from the seller
Rare and important eighteenth-century Neapolitan edition dedicated to classical numismatics; the work, translated from German by Gio. Lud. Schulze, is enriched by the precious and widespread historical, critical, and etymological annotations of the scholar Giuseppe Budon. The volume opens with a famous and solemn dedication "To the Sacred Royal Majesty of Maria Carolina of Austria, Queen of Sicily," testifying to the editorial prestige of the work in Bourbon Naples in the late eighteenth century.
Full contemporary parchment binding with a gold-tooled spine
Complete work including title page within a figured typographic frame, dedication to Maria Carolina of Austria, a broad methodological text on Roman and Greek numismatics, and an exhaustive final "Index of Subjects".
Genuine copy, well preserved and free of invasive restorations. The contemporary parchment binding is solid and well anchored, with slight and natural foxing and time-worn marks on the boards; a small marginal imperfection/missing edge at the perimeter of the gold-tooled panel on the spine is noted. Interior very fresh, pages solid and crisp with sporadic and normal foxing or slight marginal browning that do not compromise readability of the text. Original sprinkled edges.
