The Stone Bridge, a 19th‑century oil painting by Frederick William Whitehead (1853‑1938) from the United Kingdom, measuring 35 cm high by 51 cm wide and sold with frame, signed by the artist and in good condition.
Description from the seller
Here we have an extremely wonderful oil on canvas by listed artist Frederick William Whitehead 1853-1938. The artwork is titled “The Stone Bridge” and features a golden afternoon light falling on a field with cattle grazing by the nearby stream. The artist has captured the reflections of the bridge perfectly on the water surrounded by the dried out grasses of an English landscape. The painting is signed lower right. A beautiful lively antique piece which would grace any wall in your home.
Biography :
He was a Landscape, still life, architect & portrait painter who was born in Leamington Spa. He studied under John Burgess & Juliens, Paris, and exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Society of British Artists (53 works) & elsewhere, examples in Dorchester Museum. He began to paint in Dorset from 1893 & was influenced by Constable. “Among the first British impressionists exhibiting art specifically relating to Hardy’s Wessex was Frederick Whitehead. Working en plein air – directly from nature – – with landscapes viewed through a Hardyean lens- he embraced the Hardy Brand – which was advantageous when exhibiting and selling work in London’s Royal Academy and other galleries.
