Description from the seller
Scenes from Bohemian Life — Henry Murger. Original lithographs by Paul Jarach. (Complete in 2 volumes).
PUBLISHER: Les Bibliophiles de Montmartre (1951-1953).
Superb luxury edition intended for discerning collectors. The work is complete in its two volumes presented as loose sheets (unbound, original issue condition) under the publisher’s illustrated wrappers, protected by sturdy gray speckled cloth-covered slipcases and boards.
This is an exceptionally confidential edition limited to only 125 copies worldwide. This set bears the NUMBER 27 and has the unique characteristic of being a NAMED COPY, printed especially for “Monsieur le Commandant Hériot.”
The emblematic work of Henry Murger (which inspired Puccini’s famous opera) is magnified here by the talent of Paul Jarach, who delivers superb black-and-white lithographs, full-page (illustrations accompanying the text) or elegantly integrated around the initial letters of the text. Finely printed using a hand press.
CONDITION:
Very good overall condition. The inner pages are very fresh, with beautiful whiteness and no foxing. The original protective slipcases and cartons are solid and have performed their protective role perfectly, showing only very discreet light rubbing marks on the outer edges. A magnificent witness of mid-20th-century bibliophile publishing.
